R&D Modelling Engineer – Battery Systems

Reference: 0484

Our Client: Company Profile

Our client VITO NV is an independent Flemish research organisation in the area of cleantech and sustainable development who strive to accelerate the transition to a sustainable world. EnergyVille in Genk, Belgium, is a collaboration between the Belgian research partners KU Leuven, VITO , Imec and UHasselt in the fields of sustainable energy and intelligent energy systems. They are looking for a R&D Modelling Engineer Battery Systems.

The activities at VITO/Energyville cover – among others – cutting-edge technological evolutions in the fields of electrical storage systems, renewable systems, electrification of heating, transport & industrial equipment, and energy efficiency improvement of technical applications. A wide array of exciting projects include for example the mapping of energy flows in a moving train and its transformation into a solar-powered train or the development of an off-grid compressor with net-zero carbon emissions.

Vander meiren & Pauwels Recruitment is helping VITO / EnergyVille for the recruitment of a:

R&D Modelling Engineer – Battery Systems

Suitable for candidates combining a PhD in engineering, physics or mathematics with (battery) modelling experience and good knowledge of electrochemistry

Function

As a Battery Systems Modelling Engineer you contribute to the physics-based analysis and development of advanced electrochemical battery modelling including lithium-ion battery technologies for wider energy storage applications. With your knowledge of electrochemistry and access to the test data, you will work with team members to develop electrochemical models (such as P2D and SPM), in support of designing advanced SoX estimation algorithms for Battery Management Systems (BMS).

Your responsibilities:

  • You will develop physics-based and mathematical modelling of the electrochemical characterization of lithium-ion cells using PDE / ODE and verify accuracy of your models along with performance simulation of new cell designs.
  • You will convert ageing mechanisms from test data into mathematical representations that can be accommodated by existing models to be used in Battery Management Systems.
  • You will closely work with battery research experts to generate reduced-order models that can be used as a basis for cost-effective BMS designs.
  • You will contribute in the development of fast charge algorithms that improve safety and extend the lifetime of batteries.
  • You will conduct investigations, contribute to resolving issues and report research results, both internally and externally to customers.
  • You will pursue development of intellectual property to protect technology developments and secure VITO / EnergyVille’s competitive position.
  • You publish research results in international peer-reviewed journals.
Skills and Qualifications

  • Educational background: Master or PhD degree in engineering, physics or mathematics, preferably in the fields of Chemical, Mechanical, Energy or Control.
  • Proven competency in numerical solutions of partial and ordinary differential equations. Aptitude for mathematical modelling of linear/non-linear dynamical systems and parameter estimation.
  • Experience with electrochemical battery modelling and simulation software such as COMSOL, Matlab or Battery modelling open source software.
  • Good Programming skills such as Python and C/C++.
  • Good understanding of the physical dynamics of battery electrochemistry.
  • You’re interested in presenting your work scientifically through publications and at international forums.
  • You consider sharing information among colleagues as key to develop innovative concepts.
  • You’re fluent in English. Knowledge of Dutch or French is an asset.
Offer

  • A very competitive salary with an extensive range of benefits including allowances, meal vouchers, laptop and internet, broad range of insurances, attractive pension fund, bike lease,…..very interesting and flexible holiday package (45 days + legal holidays + optional extra holidays).
  • Flexible working hours and work location (@home, Genk, Mol, Antwerp, Ghent or Ostend).
  • Innovation is their core asset, therefore it goes without saying that VITO / EnergyVille offers its employees the opportunity to undertake additional training and keep up-to-date in their area of expertise.
  • The chance to be part of an organisation with an international reputation, known for its advanced technological research and scientific consultancy.
  • The possibility to actively contribute towards sustainable developments at local, national and global level.
